I carry a smile when I'm broken in two
And I'm nobody without someone like you
I'm trembling inside
And nobody knows it but me

"Jeff, pick up, I know you're there," Drew sighed into Jeff's answering machine. "You can't just never call us back…Well, when you get a chance, call me back."

Jeff sat silently in the dark corner of the living room. He had been going through the darkest days of his life. There was never a purpose or direction, and he wondered from time to time why he was still there in his Colorado Springs home.

Yet he just sat there, thinking. Thinking on why he was there all by himself, with no one to care about. He had his friends, but they just weren't enough. He needed his companion, who had left him two years previous. He couldn't believe the mistake that he had made with her. He was devastated, but he could only imagine how she had felt.

That night that he ruined it all, he could remember the sound of his hand slapping across her cheek. She wanted him to stop, but he just wouldn't. He was just so angry with her, for some stupid reason that he couldn't quite remember.

Maybe he was a little surprised at how long she had stayed with him even after the abuse had arrived. He saw the sadness in her eyes, but he didn't do anything about it. He promised her time after time that he'd stop drinking, but he didn't. It took her departure for him to keep his words.

I lie awake it's a quarter past three
I'm screaming at night if you'd hear me
Yes, my heart is calling you
And nobody knows it me

Jeff woke up in the middle of the night, after having the reoccurring dream that he had for so many nights already.

She was just standing there, pleading him to stop hitting her. He was so angry and couldn't help himself. His hand hurt from the constant movement, but that didn't stop him either. The fear in her eyes and the sound of her cry was just so vivid.

Before anything else would happen, Jeff would always wake up from his dream, thanking that he didn't see the ending because he knew that it wasn't a happy one.

He glanced over at the clock and it was a quarter past three. He walked to the window and looked up at the sky. It was a clear night and stars scattered all over the sky. Every night that he saw the stars, he would always wish that he'd see his wife and two children again. He wanted to just smell her hair, see the smile on her face, or touch of her soft hands. He just missed being with her, lying peacefully with her in the dark, feeling completely secured.

How blue can I get, you can ask my heart
But like a jigsaw puzzle it's been torn all apart
A million words couldn't say just how I feel
A million years from now you know I'll be loving you still

<< Two Years Ago >>

It had been eight years since Jeff last took a drink of alcohol, but maybe it was already too late. He wanted so badly to find her, but he just didn't know where to start. He wanted her to just appear in front of his door one day, telling him that everything was going to be alright.

He had opened up with his friends and family a little, but he didn't want them to know all the changes that he had gone through. Everyday was just a constant reminder for what he had done to her. He was afraid that if he had told them, they would hate him for treating her so badly because he hated himself for doing that to her.

He was determined, with everything that he had, to find her again, to tell her that he loved her. She probably moved on with her life already, but he just wanted to tell her, if it was the last thing he did.
