Weeks went on and Maria was closer than ever with Ben.

"Ben, can I talk to you?" Meg asked Ben one day.

"Yeah, sure. What's wrong, Meg?" Ben replied.

"You know how we promised to be truthful with one another? Well, there's something that I need to tell you. I've been thinking about it for a while now and I need to know where I actually stand in your life."

"I don't really think that you should question about your-"

"Well, I am, " Meg interrupted. "You've been spending so much time with Maria lately that I just need to know how you feel about me. And don't tell me that you're just trying to help Maria out because it certainly looks like it goes much deeper than that."

"I love you, Meg, not Maria. Why do you keep questioning me that? I'm only doing this because I want us to get married really soon. That's all. Why can't you just believe me?" Ben explained.

"Maybe that's because I feel that I don't belong in this house anymore. Wherever I turn, I just feel the presence of the two of you together. Ben, I don't belong here."

"Meg, please don't say that. Please tell me that this isn't what I think it is."

"Ben, I love you, but I just can't be here. I know that I'm interfering in your relationship with Maria, which is why it's better for me to reevaluate our relationship sooner rather than later."

Ben began to speak, but Meg continued, "I know that you will try to stop me, but if you believe in us and you love me, then please let me do this. It's too painful for me to be here. Maybe it's better just for you and Maria to sort through everything. I don't know. All I know is that we need time apart."

Suddenly, Maria entered the living room and Meg and Ben both looked at her with sad faces.

"Did I interrupt something?" Maria asked innocently.

"No, I was just leaving," Meg answered.

She walked to the closet to get her bags.

"I'll see you two around," Meg said and left Ben's house.

Without saying a word, Ben left his house as well.
