The countdown began in Time Square. The music was quieting down a little from the speakers and all the musical guests and the hosts started to countdown in their respective microphones.
"10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5," everyone counted in jubilance, "4, 3, 2, 1! Happy new year!"
Everyone hugged one another tightly as the music resumed, with "Auld Lang Syne". Out of nowhere, Jeff and Charlene appeared.
"Where were you guys?" Jessica asked.
Before either Jeff or Charlene could answer, Ashley said, "We don't want to know."
Charlene shot her friend a dirty look, but laughed along with everyone else.
After a few more hours, the crowd inside the studio was a lot smaller. Time Square outside was basically empty already.
Becki was already fast asleep on Drew's shoulder on a couch and he was tired himself.
It was a wonder to everyone else how Jessica and Derek were still dancing to the music. There were a few others dancing, but most of them were scattered around the room, talking and drinking. However, they didn't seem to be tired at all. She was still completely hyper and didn't want to leave.
Sara and Alex had settled down not soon after midnight and talked. They were talking for a long time and it didn't seem as if the topics were going to run out anytime soon either.
Nick, Megan, Justin and Ashley were sitting together, talking and having a few drinks. Both the people Nick and Megan were with that night had gone home already, so they sat down with Justin and Ashley, who were having a couple of drinks at the time.
It was time to get back to the hotel. Although they weren't going to leave New York for another week, they still wanted to explore the city a little more. Besides, it had already been a long day for them.
Jessica said her goodbye to Derek. He had actually given her his number and told her to keep in touch with them. Before leaving, he kissed her for the first time.
Alex also gave his number to Sara, and told her that when she would visit her family in Seattle, he would hook her up with tickets and other things at a Mariners game.
98 Degrees thanked MTV, especially Carson Daly, for inviting all of them up to the studio.
Everyone got into their respective hotel rooms and just collapsed on their beds. They didn't care if there was still in street clothes, they were a lot more tired than they had thought originally.
It was probably best if they stayed in the hotel the following day because they were so tired.
After remaining in New York for about another week, the entire group took a flight back home to Ohio.
