"Well, I guess I’ll see you tomorrow," Hollie said as she walked toward the front door.
"Yeah, I guess so," I nodded awkwardly.
We didn’t say much of anything since that little incident in the kitchen. I just couldn’t believe that I actually did something like that to her.
I stayed up most of the night, thinking what was going to happy between me and Hollie. There was no way that our relationship was just going to be the same ever again. I didn’t know if I could just keep my feelings inside anymore.
I went to school as usual the next day, driving Hollie in as I had done since the beginning of the year. It was my week to drive her, we usually alternated the driving every week. I picked her up from her house.
"I’m really glad that the physics project turned out okay," Hollie said, breaking the silence.
"Yeah," I replied. "And you were the one who was worried that it was going to turn out to be a disaster."
"I can’t help it, Nick," Hollie laughed. "You know how I am with school!"
"Yeah, tell me about it!" I said sarcastically and she punched my arm playfully.
Everything seemed to be okay between us again, although I knew sooner or later, we’d have to deal with the reality that we had actually kissed.
Hollie and I said goodbye to one another as we headed off to our first period classes, which was history for me and math for her. After history was finally over, I headed over to my locker to get my math books out.
On top of my books, there was a note. It was written, but it wasn’t signed by anyone. It read, "Meet me here at your locker right after the last period today." After studying the note for a little while longer, I realized that it was Hollie’s handwriting.
A million thoughts ran through my head. What was she going to tell me? Was it really that important that she has to write me a note about it?
I saw her briefly in physics, but since we sat at the opposite sides of the room, we didn’t talk about anything. I kept looking at her, hoping that there would be some kind of a sign that she’d show me. The day was moving slower and slower as it wore on, but it was finally the end of the day.
As I had suspected, Hollie was the one who wrote me the note. She had gotten all her books already and was waiting by my locker right when I got to the locker after the last class. I looked at her suspiciously, hoping that she’d tell me why it was all so secretive. Without saying a word to one another, Hollie and I headed over to my car. I went in the driver’s side and she climbed into the passenger’s side.
"What’s up?" I asked, breaking the long silence.
"Nick, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking since…well, since what happened over at your house yesterday," Hollie began. "I had no idea that you felt that way toward me."
"Look, Hollie, I didn’t mean to—"
"I’m actually glad that you did it because…" she fidgeted with her fingers, something she did when she was nervous, "I have felt the same way about you for a while."
My eye grew large. I really had no idea.
"I know, Nick. I know what you’re thinking. I just didn’t know if you felt the same way for me," Hollie finished.
I ran my fingers through my hair. "Yeah, well, I do."
Silence fell in the car.
"What now?" Hollie asked quietly after a little while.
"Do you want to give us a try?" I asked nervously.
"Only if you’re willing."
The two of us turned to one another. I looked straight into her emerald eyes and I knew in my heart that we belonged together.
